Chapter 21

With some free time flowing and a bountiful supply of money in their accounts, the only logical thing to do was to throw a party. The weeks had been wearisome and everyone’s thinking caps turned defective. Aryan felt brain-dead. He finally wrote up a personal statement with ten different tabs open on his laptop, each leading to exemplar personal statements, and an old thesaurus to prevent him overusing the word ‘passionate’ – a word that held no meaning any more. Its symbol of a red, fiery rose withered to dried plant remains in Aryan’s hands. He rendered it meaningless with his claimed passion for something he hadn’t once cared about. Hadn’t once dreamed about. He wondered if he was naïve for thinking dreams mattered. Life wasn’t a Disney film, after all.

Aryan helped organise the party. He and a few boys from his dormitory had gone on a weekend to book a hall from an unsuspecting elderly lady.

‘No, madam, of course there won’t be alcohol at this party,’ they reassured her. ‘We only drink squash.’

Aryan turned eighteen earlier than the others and was responsible for supplying the alcohol they had sworn off in front of the old woman. Of course, the party couldn’t break curfew, so it was going to be an unorthodox party, starting in the early evening and finishing around eight.

Aryan was in the mood to get drunk. He’d finished his personal statement and his coursework had come back marked with glittering As and A stars. He stepped into the hall. The atmosphere was threadbare, carrying a few lights and a table of flat coke. Chris helped him carry in the vodka and beers. Under Aryan’s insistence, their DJ (a self-proclaimed musical genius from economics) turned up the volume of the music. Soon enough, students were either dancing or pouring generous servings of booze into paper cups. He saw her on the dancefloor, her hair a wild mess and her eyes smoky.

‘She’s so fit,’ Chris said.

‘Indeed, she is,’ Aryan replied. He downed his drink and moved towards her.

‘Aryan,’ she said his name softly as he approached. ‘Can’t keep away? Dance with me.’

They danced close up against each other. He could feel the heat of her body. The lush scent of flowers radiated from the base of her neck and possessed him. She twirled and giggled, and then danced in that uncontained way as people do when nobody is watching. She was so comfortable in her skin and it made her that much more attractive. He wanted to get closer to her. When the music came to a halt, she led him away by the hand to talk.

‘Aryan, listen, it’s important to me that I put my ambitions first. My studies are my absolute priority…’ she began. He’d find out later that if he continued listening, he’d have heard her say, ‘but I do quite like you, and I suppose it wouldn’t be the worst thing if we saw each other. If you’d like?’ But his attention had been nabbed by the unfamiliar figure entering the hall.
